About this position

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing complex bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly unionized and non-union payrolls.

Reporting to: Manager, Payroll & HRIS

*Non-Bargaining

Please note this is a temporary position ending approximately December 31, 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must be able to perform, but not be limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for time sheet audit, verifying, balancing, adjusting entries from the electronic Time & Attendance system (UKG) for the imports
  • Liaison with all managers and employees to assist with Time & Attendance adjustments and approvals within the deadlines
  • Responsible for the maintenance of vacation, personal leave banks and time banks
  • Required to be payroll compliant with all aspects of the collective agreements, HR Manuals and CLC for GAFAE, CALDA, UNIFOR, ALPA, CUPE & Non-Bargaining groups
  • Assist with the balancing of payroll totals to the backup on a per pay basis
  • Responsible for the calculations and preparation of EFT payments to outside vendors
  • Responsible for Terminations/Leaves including the upload of ROEs to the Service Canada site
  • Responsible to audit all New Hires, Changes, Increases, retro calculations, Personal Information, employee benefits from Onboarding and HRIS updates by employees and HRIS administrator
  • Responsible for the calculation and preparation of Company pension plans, union dues and garnishees
  • Monthly Stats Canada reports for different locations as requested
  • Assist with year end as required
  • BI reporting-People Analytics-creating and running reports as required to complete daily tasks for self and managers within the organization
  • Solving issues within the payroll software-working with UKG to maximize the system for efficiency
  • Backup for all tasks related to other Payroll Specialists
  • Cross training all areas of the payroll department for full coverage at all times

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Include, but not limited to, the following minimum skills and qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of Post Secondary Education;
  • Minimum four (4) years of previous relevant experience;
  • Enrolled or completed National Payroll Institute Certificate- Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP)
  • Strong computer skills required – advanced Excel skills, creating reports in Business Intelligence
  • Experience with payroll software; Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG)
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify and research problems
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Adept at managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast paced, team-oriented environment while ensuring accuracy, confidentiality and effective time management
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and ability to prioritize without guidance
  • Proven customer service skills with a strong customer focus
  • Excellent communication skills- verbal and written
  • Ability to communicate in Inuktitut or other Indigenous language considered an asset
  • Ability to obtain and retain an Airport Restricted Area Pass in accordance with the Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program regulated by Transport Canada
