Job Summary

As the Senior Systems Test Lead for the Simulation Team, you will be responsible for providing expert advice and services to test systems procured and/or developed by NAV CANADA. This position provides assurance that the tested systems are delivered with suitable levels of integrity and quality for safe deployment to NAV CANADA’s training environments.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead, assign tasks and monitor completion of tasks for the Simulation Systems Test team, which includes members from the direct team and other cross-functional, cross-departmental project teams.
  • Assist the direct manager to plan and co-ordinate the testing activities of Simulation Systems, which includes internally developed and procured software applications and systems.
  • Validate the capability of systems to meet functional, non-functional and performance requirements.
  • Develop and document detailed test plans, criteria, and expected results based on user and business requirements.
  • Ensure that configuration management and test activities of systems are planned and performed according to requirements and standards set by the NAV CANADA Test Centre of Excellence (TCoE), the effective NAV CANADA Quality Management System and the NAV CANADA Safety Management System.
  • Co-ordinate with ATS Learning and Technology departments to assure system availability and appropriate testing has been accomplished for user acceptance and deployment of the systems.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to clarify expectations, advocate for quality assurance and resolve issues.
  • For procured systems, ensures contractors understand and adhere to established testing protocols, quality standards, and communication expectations throughout the design and acceptance process.
  • Mentor and support test team members, fostering professional growth, sharing expertise and promoting TCoE best practices within the team and across the project portfolio.
  • Serves as testing authority during project planning and design by contributing to reviews, design demonstrations and risk assessments to ensure alignment with business needs

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Degree from a recognized university or community college with an acceptable specialization in computer, electrical, or systems engineering, computer science or information systems, or an acceptable combination of education, experience and training..

Experience:

  • Extensive knowledge and a minimum of 5 years’ experience with system testing, test engineering principles and validation of large-scale projects for software and hardware.
  • Knowledge and experience with Requirements and Test Management tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, etc. as well as Test Automation tools and frameworks, such as Selenium, SmartBear, Grafana, etc. 
  • Experience with creating and maintaining test harnesses.
  • Experience working with third party suppliers overseeing contractor activities, ensuring adherence to project requirements and quality standards .
  • Experience with product development teams working in a Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) environment.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of software development and testing processes from preliminary design to formal testing and acceptance.
  • Knowledge of software requirements management tools, problem tracking tools, configuration management tools and test management tools, such as Azure DevOps.
  • Knowledge of maintenance processes, procedures and business functions in context of NAV CANADA’s business.
  • Knowledge of test maturity models such as TMMI.
  • Thorough knowledge of industry trends and developments in a rapidly changing environment.

Abilities:

  • Ability to develop and execute on test plans/protocols/cases, and report on the test analysis/metrics and provide recommendations to management
  • Ability to oversee the test group activities to analyze and identify test coverage gaps and missing links between requirements and tests, including unit tests and tests procedures developed by other testers
  • Ability to supervise, assign tasks and direct the work of the Simulation Systems test and Project teams
  • Ability to coach, share knowledge and actively develop the skills and competency of other key team members
  • Skill in professional discussions with internal customers and management and with external consultants and industry to ensure that important aspects are not overlooked.
  • Skill in writing clear, cohesive, and concise documentation that is easily understandable by colleagues, management, and clients.
  • Skill in communicating clearly in conversation and in presentations to both technical and non-technical staff and management.

Working conditions:

  • Occasional Travel required
  • This position is a hybrid position with a minimum – 3 days per week on site at the Ottawa Technical Systems Centre.
