Job Description

This role programs CNC machines using CAM software and sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and numerical control machines to machine metallic and non-metallic parts. The position involves interpreting technical drawings, preparing and verifying setups, running trial and production operations, and ensuring all finished components meet precise specifications and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Program CNC machines using CAM software to produce metallic and non-metallic parts according to specifications.
  • Set up and operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control machines and machining centers.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Pull drawings and check part geometry using AutoCAD and SolidWorks software.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on materials or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculate and set machine controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth of cut, and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control programs.
  • Start and observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications using appropriate measuring tools and inspection methods.
  • Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings and programmed control data before full production.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assemblies to ensure proper fit and function.
  • Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation to confirm functionality and performance.
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions and create sketches of parts or products to be machined.
  • Collaborate and confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, and other team members to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Operate CNC mills and CNC lathes, as well as manual mills, manual lathes, automated knee mills, horizontal cut-off saws, and disc sanders as needed.
  • Use precision measuring equipment, such as calipers and micrometers, to inspect and verify work throughout the machining process.
  • Follow established safety, quality, and production procedures in a machine shop and production environment.
  • Support production needs on 2nd shift (3:30 pm–12:00 am) or 3rd shift (11:30 pm–7:30 am) as scheduled.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to program and operate CNC mills and CNC lathes.
  • Proficiency in operating manual mills, manual lathes, and automated knee mills.
  • Ability to operate a horizontal cut-off saw and disc sander as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, and specifications.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and SolidWorks to pull drawings and check geometry.
  • Skill in selecting, aligning, and securing fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials on various machines.
  • Ability to calculate and set machining parameters such as speeds, feeds, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring equipment, including calipers and micrometers, to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and adjust machine controls or programs to correct out-of-tolerance conditions.
  • Strong schematic, electrical, and hardware troubleshooting skills related to CNC machines and machine shop equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a production and machine shop environment on 2nd or 3rd shift.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of one year of experience in a related environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with CNC mills on 2nd shift (3:30 pm–12:00 am) or 3rd shift (11:30 pm–7:30 am).
  • Experience in a production-focused machine shop environment.
  • Familiarity with cabling and hardware associated with CNC machinery.
  • Ability to develop part specifications from general descriptions and create clear part sketches.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, and other stakeholders to resolve machining or assembly issues.
