QA Lab Tech (Full Time)
Department: All Openings, Quality

POSITION SUMMARY:

Ensure that materials and tools used in the manufacture and inspection of products fall within parameters established by the Company Quality Assurance Manual (QAM), Piper Process Specifications (PPS), and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) and/or any other approved standard. Use a wide assortment of tools and instruments including but not limited to: Super Mic, barometer, manometer, torque tester, Rockwell machine, dead weight tester, burn test chamber, and high temperature oven. Work independently or with minimal direction from Leadperson/Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Work from complicated drawings, handbooks, specifications, FARs, QAM, engineering/tooling/rework orders, sketches, and written/verbal instructions.

Ensure that only the latest approved applicable drawings, specifications, FARs, QAM, and instructions are used during inspection and testing.

Accept or reject according to specifications.

Examine defective parts to determine cause of defect.

Note and report deviations from established specifications and initiate required documentation to effect corrections.

Determine salvageability of defective items.

Conduct burn test to determine compliance with FAR 23.853.

Conduct destructive and non-destructive tests for the detection and reporting of physical and chemical hazards and avoidance of potential toxic effects and other product hazards.

Set up standard and special purpose laboratory equipment to test, evaluate, and calibrate other instruments and test equipment.

Conduct certification and re-certification of internal welders per QAM IV-F and IV-G.

Administer practical tests for non-destructive testing done in-house.

Maintain identification and calibration intervals for internal “G” series tools.

Conduct salt spray test of plated parts.

Perform surveillance of heat treat, plastic parts bonding, polyester resins, bond clean line and salt bath.

Test, calibrate, and repair various electrical, mechanical, electromechanical and electronic measuring/recording/indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards.

Perform various visual and dimensional inspections on Piper manufactured and vendor provided materials and products for conformance to specification.

Maintain requirements for inspection tools requiring outside calibrations and repairs.

Perform lab test as required in the areas of alclad coating, destructive testing, turco cleaning solution and non-chromated etch solution utilized in the parts cleaning line.

Re-certify adhesives for shelf life extension.

Develop and conduct test to evaluate product safety levels and recommend measures to reduce or eliminate hazards.

Perform housekeeping chores as department requirements dictate.

Report all improper operations, faulty equipment, and materials and unusual conditions to proper supervision.

Perform other related duties as assigned by QA Engineer or Supervisor required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities. May be required to train and assist other employees.


QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Two year educational/vocational training in manufacturing, and three to five years Quality Assurance experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least one year in a laboratory environment, or equivalent combination experience and education.

Basic mathematics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to calculate rates, ratios and percentages; and use of advanced shop mathematics and lab formulas is necessary to perform the duties of this position.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

The employee must possess the ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external customers in both written and oral form. The ability to communicate effectively with the FAA and internal and external customers in both written and oral form.
