Job Description:

Fabricates, modifies, assembles, installs, operates, repairs and maintains, complex laboratory equipment, experimental and commercial apparatus. May assist in the design of complex equipment while providing input on design of basic equipment. Performs extremely complex tests and experiments. Records, evaluates, and reports data. Summarizes test data via written tabulation, charts, and graphs, and prepares informal reports.

DUTIES AND RESPONSBIBILITIES:
  • Under minimal supervision with general direction:
  • Responsible for fabrication, modification, installation, and documentation of complex laboratory, experimental or commercial equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment or performs tests requiring knowledge of processes.
  • Interprets general instructions, plans sequence of assembly, maintains quality assurance documentation, and prepares sketches and schematics.
  • May assist in the design of complex equipment and provide input concerning design or feasibility of developmental, test, or experimental equipment.
  • Operates specialized equipment and/or performs tests requiring knowledge of processes.
  • Responsible for execution of a set of laboratory experiments or for a complex laboratory function.
  • Records, evaluates, and reports data. Summarizes test data via written tabulation, charts, and graphs, and prepares informal reports.
  • Diagnoses and corrects operational problems or trouble sources in equipment or tests. Develops solutions to extremely complex problems that occur including assisting in the design of specialized components.
  • May initiate the procurement of standard materials, services, and parts required for tests and equipment, and provide necessary liaison in work area.
  • May provide direction to other technicians on large programs including offsite or during shift work.
  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.
  • Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices.
  • May participate in budgeting, scheduling and cost estimating of work as applicable.
  • Carries out a variety of routine laboratory duties including housekeeping and clean up.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
  • Typically requires associates degree or equivalent with nine or more years of experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education. Training and/or experience from the military or a trade school highly desirable.
  • Ability and willingness to work on systems which have unusual conditions such as high pressure, high voltage, high energy, cryogens, or radioactive materials.
  • Knowledge of computer operations and applications pertinent to the field required.
  • Analytical ability to understand detailed instructions, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to diagnose complex mechanical/electrical problems and find effective solutions.
  • Special skills and expertise to use complex equipment or experimental techniques.
  • Communication skills necessary to write and record precise information.
